“Before my daughter came along, I’d spend up to 45 minutes doing my makeup every morning,” recalls Rathi Devi, 38, a writer and mum to Sasikala, 10 months. “These days my beauty routine only involves hurriedly applying lipstick in the bus on my way to work.”
If this sounds like you, know that while you may no longer have time to experiment with the latest makeup looks, you can still cover the bases using the essentials. Makeup guru Joanna Koh, who runs freelance makeup and hairstyle agency Indigo Artisans, suggests a five-step, no-fuss routine that’ll leave you looking impeccable in just eight minutes!
Step 1 — 2 minutes
Base & skincare
Korean-style cushion compacts are multi-functional. They offer lightweight UV protection, brighten skin and are also a foundation and corrector/concealer. The large sponges covers a wide area quickly for fast and full coverage.
Sulwhasoo Perfecting Cushion Brightening, $74/15g, from Tangs.
Step 2 — 1 minute
A powder blusher instantly perks up your complexion. Choose a cheek palette that has either a blush/highlighter or a blush/bronzer, or even better, one with all three. The triple-threat lets you add more contours or accent cheekbones…
Nars Dual Intensity Blush in Frenzy, $68/6g, from Tangs.
Step 3 — 1 minute
Well-groomed brows “lift” your face and give it instant definition. If your brows are full, brush on some tinted brow gel so that they look neat and well-shaped. Fill in sparse brows with an ultra-thin pencil, then brush through them to look natural.
Urban Decay’s Brow Tamer Flexible Hold Brow Gel, $30/4.4ml, from Sephora.
Step 4 — 3 minutes
Instead of eyeshadow and eyeliner, try a waterproof pencil eyeliner that you line your upper eyelids with, then use a smudge brush to gently blend it upwards. Play with dark brown, deep purple, navy, even green. Anchor the look with black mascara.
Tarte Skinny SmoulderEYES Amazonian clay waterproof liner, $30, from Sephora.
Step 5 — 1 minute
A strong, intense lip colour shouts confidence in the office, or pick a fun and bright one for a day out. Choose lippies that are hydrating and can last the day.
Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Crème, $42/3.4g, from Sephora.
Bright skin tip
Exfoliate up to four times a week to keep your complexion bright. Add an exfoliating powder to your cleanser to create a scrub that sloughs off dead skin cells in one easy step.
