Welcoming a child into the world is a wonderful thing. However, not every couple or person’s path to becoming a parent is the same.

When they can’t conceive, some couples try fertility treatments, which can be frustrating when these fail. Others decide to adopt a child. Bringing up a child wo is not your own is life-changing ― not only will you transform their lives (and yours) forever, you’ll experience the joys of being a parent for the first time or all over again.

Many well-known personalities are raising non-biological children ― several are single parents, while others are completing their families by embracing more kids. Scroll through to find out who they are…

Hugh Jackman and his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, 62, are parents to Ava Eliot, 13, and Oscar Maximillian, 18. After dealing with miscarriages and trying to conceive through IVF without success, Jackman and Furness decided to adopt two children. Jackman says they had always planned to do so anyway, perhaps after having biological kids. “I don’t think of them as adopted ― they’re our children.” He adds that he and his wife are “believers in destiny”, and feel that “things happened the way they are meant to”.  On adopting a mixed-race child, Jackman explained that “(their) motivation behind adopting was, ‘Where is the need?’”, and they found that “the biggest need is in mixed-race kids.” (Photo: Daily Mail, Popsugar)

Blanchett, who says that her three sons get along famously with Edith, notes, “It’s been a remarkable thing watching them welcome her and become, you know, a little troop.” As to speculation that she adopted Edith because she wanted a daughter, the two-time Oscar winner explains, “I felt we had space, enough emotional room in our hearts and we’re privileged enough to have the capacity to have another child, so it wasn’t about biology”, and added that she didn’t have “a desire to have a girl necessarily”. As a single mum, she has mentioned that her mother, Gerda Maritz, also helps her with out with the kids. Theron told Elle in the May 2018 issue, “I never saw a difference in raising an adopted child versus my own biological child. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on something. This was always my first choice, even when I was in a relationship. I was very honest with my partners that I was open to having my own biological kids but that adoption had to be a part of my life. I felt that strongly about it.”(Photos: Stars Changes, Janet Charlton’s Hollywood)
