Traits of a great dad

Fathers these days play a more active role in parenting. These hands-on men don't just take the role of provider and protector, they have these other desirable qualities... They:

1. Discipline their kids

Love your children but discipline your kids on what is right and wrong with the power of your words. Instead of rewarding your children for actions that are expected of them, such as house chores or performing well in school, enforce consequences if your child goes wayward.

2. Allow mistakes

Your children are human and will make mistakes that are part of growing up. Many questionable things your children do are rites of passage but remind your children that repeated irresponsibility won’t be tolerated.

3. Are open-minded

Cultures and values change over time. Do not insist on imposing values of your time on your children. For instance, young people are more vocal about their views on controversial subjects. Adapt your parenting methods to fit the requirements of this generation.

4. Show an appreciation for things

From the food on the table to good education, show your children the value of money and to earn what they want. Model for them how to hold onto a job to pay for things and they will understand the importance of a good education. Don’t freely give your children money as and when they demand it as this will develop an over-reliance on you to provide for them.

5. Know their kids are not them

Everyone is different. Give your children freedom to decide what kind of life they want to live. Be prepared to give your children the space to form their own values and opinions within a morally accepted framework that you can share with them.

6. Enjoy their kids

Have fun with your kids. Play games, take them out to movies, attend their sport competitions, plays or school activities. Also, take time to talk to your children and help them with homework when you can – that’s bonding too.

7. Are a good role model

Role model good behaviour such as eating greens and exercising healthily. Also, set a good example by not indulging in drugs and bad habits such as smoking.
