Topic 1: Confident Parenting in a Too-Much-of-Everything World ― Prof Bill Doherty

It's hard for parents to maintain their sense of balance in a competitive world that sees their children handling numerous opportunities and challenges. Prof Doherty takes a look at the pressures contemporary families face. Plus, learn how to put family life first, ways to be more a confident leader in your family, as well as how to ensure that each child blossoms.

Topic 2: Parenting as a Team ― Prof Bill Doherty

It’s essential to work well together as parents. Find out the common mistakes to avoid making and what supportive co-parenting is. Plus, learn skills to being an effective parenting team when raising your children ― use your differences as strengths rather than weaknesses.

Topic 3: Becoming an Effective Emotion Coach for your Children ― Mr Neo Eng Chuan

As parents, you respond to your child’s emotions right from the start ― assuring him when he is afraid, comforting her when she is sad. Yet, most parents are unlikely to have any in-depth training in handling junior’s emotions. In this workshop, you’ll evaluate the importance of emotional intelligence, as well as learn how to recognise, respond to and validate your child’s feelings. You’ll also get find out what obstacles parents face in becoming an effective emotion coach.

Speakers' Profiles


Eng Chuan is the founder and principal psychologist at CaperSpring, an organisation that provides psychological and counselling services and work. He works with adults and couples helping them cope with emotional concerns and relationship difficulties. He specializes in the working of emotions and receives continuous training in Emotion Focus Therapy – a modality pioneered by Prof. Leslie Greenberg of York University at Toronto, Canada.

He started his career in the Singapore Navy, commanded warships and held various military HR appointments. Eng Chuan also served as a Defense Psychologist. In 2005, he was deployed to the Northern Arabia Gulf to provide psychological support to the SAF Task Group. His last appointment at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) was head of the Counselling Branch at the SAF Counselling Centre.

Eng Chuan studied Psychology at the Australian National University under a MINDEF award. He pursued graduate level education at the National Institute of Education, Singapore.


William Doherty, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Family Social Science where directs the Minnesota Couples on the Brink Project and the Citizen Professional Center. He is Past-President of the National Council on Family Relations, the oldest interdisciplinary family studies organization in North America.

He has authored 11 professional books on family studies and family therapy, many scholarly publications in variety of journals and books, and five books for the lay public on the topics of family rituals, confident parenting, marriage, overscheduled kids, and the family dynamics of wedding planning.

His current interests focus on community engagement to strengthen families and couple relationships, and the prevention of unnecessary divorce. In 2013 he cofounded The Doherty Relationship Institute with his daughter Elizabeth Doherty Thomas.

He recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Family Therapy Association.
