While some milestones are important developmentally, others just give us mums the feel-good factor!

Feel-good factors that make mums smile

  • First smile This usually happens at between 4 and 7 weeks. It’s an important sign of your baby’s growing social awareness. It’s also a guaranteed heartstrings-tugging moment.
  • First giggle Your baby will probably give his first gurgling chuckle at between 8 and 12 weeks. You’ll want to bottle the sound and keep it forever.
  • Crawling This isn’t a set milestone - some babies do it as early as 5 months, some do it commando-style, some go backwards or sideways, while others just bum-shuffle. Whatever your baby does, his first attempts to move on his own are the start of a new adventure for both of you.
  • Waving goodbye What could be cuter than being waved bye-bye when you pop your little one into his cot or when you leave home for work? Babies usually learn to do this between 9 and 12 months, and start to clap their hands around the same time.
  • Sleeping through Whether he cracks it at 2 weeks or 2 years, that first unbroken night’s sleep can never come soon enough.
  • “I love you, Mummy!” Depending on your little one’s speech development, he could be saying those magic words soon after 1, or not until well after 2. But we know you’ll never forget that first “wuv oo”.
