Trying for a baby? Then make sure you and the hubs have these at hand!

You and your hubby have enjoyed a blissful marriage so far, ticking off most of the to-do items on your newlyweds list. Honeymoon? Check. Exotic vacays? Check. Set up your new home to your satisfaction? Check. But recently, something just seems to be missing. Looks like it’s time to move to the next stage of your marriage ― kids!

And when you start trying, forget those movies where the women gets pregnant after doing it just once! Of course, if you are lucky, you might hit the jackpot quickly. However, others might have to keep trying for some time before succeeding. SmartParents has compiled a list you’ll need in your quest to start a family. Read on to find out what these are…

1. Multivitamins

Multivitamins are specially formulated to ensure that your body gets the vitamins and nutrients needed to help sustain and boost your health. For women, make sure your multivitamin contains at least 400 grams of folic acid as it helps your body to produce more red blood cells. This helps prevent brain and spine defects in the developing embryo. For men, multivitamins that contain zinc will aid in the production of semen and testosterone.

2. Sperm-friendly lubrication

The safest lubricant is your body’s own cervical mucus. The type of cervical mucus you produce depends on your ovulation cycle. The best mucus for conception, produced during your fertile period, is translucent and can be stretched 2.5cm or 5cm between your fingers without breaking.

Lack of lubrication can result in painful sex, which may put you off it completely. If you are unable to produce enough lubrication for any reason, don’t fret ― get sperm-friendly lubrication from your gynaecologist or pharmacist.

Your fertile window only lasts about six to seven days out of the whole month, so make sure to keep track!

3. Calendar or app that tracks your ovulation

Knowing when you are ovulating is very important if you are trying to get pregnant. Your fertile window only lasts about six to seven days out of the whole month, so make sure to keep track! Mark it down on your planner, or download a free app that can help you track your ovulation cycle. Or use ovulation kits and fertility testers to figure out when you are ovulating.

4. Pregnancy tests

Many pregnancy test kits are on the market these days. There is even a test that tells you how far along you are in your pregnancy! However, if you are trying to conceive, you’ll be doing more than just one test per week. So, it won’t make sense to buy the most expensive test repeatedly, only for the result to come out negative. Cheaper versions do the job just as well without compromising on accuracy of the results. Those that come in packs are more economical, yet are as reliable!

5. Blender

How does a blender help in your quest to conceive? Well, you can use this food processor to juice up! To ensure that your body gets the right amount of vitamins and nutrients to function properly, chug fresh juice or smoothie daily. Blend fresh veggies and fruits every morning for you and your other half, then make a toast before you go about your daily activities. It’s a good investment as you can also use it to blend baby food when your little one arrives.

6. Sleep

Lack of Zzzzs or an irregular sleeping pattern can cause hormonal imbalances in both men and women, which makes it more difficult for you to get pregnant. Sufficient rest is a very important factor for TTC couples. Plus, it doesn’t help if one or the both of you are too tired to even think about sex, let alone get it on!

7. An exercise routine

A fitness programme helps keep you fit and healthy, so that your body will be ready to carry a baby. Exercising also boosts your energy levels and triggered your body to release endorphins, a feel-good hormone known to increase sexual arousal. Why not work out with your mate ― spending time with your significant other won’t just give you a toned body, you’ll get to bond! So, what are you waiting for? Put on your exercise gear, stat!

8. A positive attitude

Use this opportunity to get to know and appreciate your body ― believe in yourself and enjoy the process. You’ll get pregnant when the time is right. Stressing about it will only make it harder for you to conceive as stress hormones can affect your fertility. 9. A healthy libido

No matter how good your stamina is, trying night after night for a baby can be mentally and physically draining. Try these simple tips to keep your sex drive in fine fettle:

* Open your heart Share how you are feeling with your spouse and make sure you’re both comfortable. This will remind you just why you married this person, and why both of you are trying so hard to create a family together. It doesn’t hurt to reassure each other of your love once in a while.

* Foreplay and sex toys Foreplay is important for setting the mood, and ensures that women produce enough cervical mucus for lubrication. It also helps to increase the chances of orgasm in women, which can help with sperm retention. Sex toys can help spice things up in the bedroom as well, so if you are feeling adventurous, give it a go!

* Avoid libido killers Smoking, high alcohol consumption, stress and lack of sleep can all contribute to a decrease in your sex drive!

- Herbs that boost libido Herbs like Ashwaganda root and red ginseng are said to help with your libido. The Ashwaganda root helps support thyroid function, which in turn helps to regulate hormones. Red ginseng increases the natural testosterone levels in men, as well as blood flow to the penis.
