Being a mum is hard enough even without getting mocked by know-it-alls who think they know better. How many times have you had to bite your tongue when someone told you your breastfed baby is constipated because you inhaled sambal at dinner?

How many times have you wanted to spit in the faces of disapproving onlookers when you were just trying to quietly breastfeed in public? And how badly do you want to tell your chain-smoking in-laws to keep their filthy mitts off your bub? And the angst goes on…over and above having to deal with piles of dirty laundry, unwashed bottles and sleepless nights.

Somehow, celebrity mums not only seem to navigate the mind-boggling world of parenting with ease, they do so in the spotlight! These women inspire because they are candid about motherhood (even if it’s a fail), even and use humour to deal with haters.

#1 Pink

The singer, a mother of two, does not suffer fools gladly and will always tell it like it is. The breastfeeding advocate is also the kind of person who would stop traffic for you, so that you can usher your kids across the road safely. Pink, 38, gave an incredible speech at the recent MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) about self-acceptance which moved many to tears. When her 6-year-old daughter Willow dropped the bombshell that she was teased in school because “I'm the ugliest girl I know… I look like a boy with long hair”, the three-time Grammy winner took action. Making a PowerPoint presentation, she showed her daughter androgynous artists like Michael Jackson and Annie Lennox who “live their truth, are probably made fun of every day of their life, and carry on and wave their flag and inspire the rest of us.” Pink’s powerful and stirring VMAs speech about the importance of body positivity gave the audience a glimpse into what an awesome mum she is, especially when she concluded her pep talk with, "We don’t change. We take gravel in a shell and we make a pearl, and we help other people to change…” (Photo: ET Online/Getty/Kevin Mazur)

#2 Kelly Clarkson

Ashamed of your mum bod? Then the first American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson will probably advise you to sc**w the haters. She told People magazine, “Luckily I am superconfident, so I’ve never had a problem with shutting people down and saying, ‘Yeah, you know, that’s just what I’m rocking. It’s fine.’” Not only do we love that she doesn’t give a fig what people say about her baby weight, we appreciate her candour in confessing that pregnancy is not as glamorous as people imagine. For Pete’s sake, not all of us are genetically blessed like supermodel mum of two Gisele Bündchen ― after all, it’ll take at least nine months to drop those dress size/s because that’s how long it took for bubba to gestate. You can count on Clarkson, 35, and mum to Remington, 1, and River Rose, 3, to be your cheerleader who will remind you that your body made your beautiful baby, so be proud! #3 Olivia Wilde

If every mum squad needs a self-deprecating yummy mummy who shines a spotlight on just how unglam motherhood is, Olivia Wilde should be their mascot. Wilde, 33, thinks she’s just meh, especially when she hasn’t showered all day or has baby vomit on her hair. As if motherhood and acting aren’t enough, she also volunteers for Artists for Peace and Justice, which raises funds to build schools and create educational programmes for children in Haiti. If you follow her on Twitter, you’ll know that this almond-eyed beauty (her fiancé is comedian Jason Sudekis) uses wry humour when she shares the trials of motherhood. Indeed, in one of her posts she’s said, “You don't know love ’til you’ve cleaned s**t off a car seat together.” Still, the model-turned-actress-turned activist and mother to Daisy, 1, and Otis, 3, is mad about being a mum. She once said, “Motherhood is heart-exploding, blissful hysteria.” (Photo: Instagram/Olivia Wilde)

#4 Kristen Bell

We’ won’t be surprised if you have a girl crush on pint-sized actress Kristen Bell, a women’s rights advocate who is not just goofy and sweet, she supports good causes like animal rights. Indeed, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) named her Sexiest Vegetarian in 2013. Mum to daughters Delta 2, and Lincoln, 4, Bell, dedicates her spare time to charity work including Invisible Children, the Red Cross and the Alzheimer’s Association. Unlike other celeb mums who would only front a magazine cover only after they’ve slimmed down to their super-skinny selves, Bell, 37, shot a Redbook cover barely three months after giving birth. She said, “I had to surrender to not worrying about the way I looked, how much I weighed, because that’s just part of the journey of having a baby.” Most importantly, she is the voice of a Disney princess Anna in Frozen, a strong female character who (spoiler alert!) sacrifices herself to save her sister. That’s girl power! (Photo: Instagram/Kristen Bell)

#5 Dee Hsu

You’ll definitely want someone with a quick wit and sharp sense of humour on your squad. Commonly known as Xiao S, or Little S, Hsu, 39, used to be part of singing duo S.O.S with her elder sister Barbie Hsu, but later took on more hosting roles after putting her singing career to rest. The quick-witted Taiwanese television host married businessman Mike Hsu in 2005, is now a full-time mum to three girls, Alice, 5, Lily, 9, and Elly, 11. You’ll long for a mummy date with this hilarious lass, who jokingly refers to herself as IPSS, or International Professional Super Star, on social media. She once said that she shows pictures of male stars to her daughters, and ask if he’s better looking than their father. She laughs, “They’ll say their father. Then I’ll ask if the male star is cuter or their grandpa is cuter and they’ll say their grandpa. So okay, I hope they find someone like their grandpa in the future.” By the way, if you’re mummy pals with her, chances are you’d get invited to one of her girls’ lavish birthday parties – Alice was thrown an elaborate Alice in Wonderland themed 5th birthday bash in April this year, complete with a body artist to paint temporary tattoos on the guests. #6 Tina Fey

If you’re a clueless first-time mum, yearning for support or advice, you’re definitely going to appreciate the truth bombs that American actress, comedian and mum of two, Tina Fey, drops about parenting. The hilarious and downright straight talking Saturday Night Live Alumni will come to your aid when you’re facing breastfeeding blues: “Whatever you do breastfeeding-wise—great. Great. Whatever. The important thing is doing what works for you and your baby. That's what's best.” Married to musical director and composer Jeff Richmond, Fey, 47, she’s even spoken about the challenges of being a working mum, and given us an awesome answer to people who ask how you juggle it all. “‘You’re screwing it all up, aren’t you?’ their eyes say. My standard answer is that I have the same struggles as any working parent but with the good fortune to be working at my dream job.” (Photo: Annie Leibovitz for American Express)

#7 Chrissy Teigen

Oh, Chrissy, what would we do without you? From her no holds barred honesty about her fertility struggles and postpartum depression, to coming clean about what giving birth really entailed (“No one told me I would be coming home in diapers too”), the 32 year-old gorgeous model and host crushes mum-shamers everywhere with her take-no-prisoners approach to people who diss her. Criticised for having cereal while she was pregnant, letting her 1 year-old daughter Luna wear jelly shoes, and for going out to dinner with her hubby, singer-songwriter John Legend a week after Luna was born, Teigen admits that the mum-shaming does get to her, but she also tweeted a strong message to her critics: “Photos are literally split-seconds moments in time that evolve. I despise mommy shamers. I am a proud shamer of mommy shamers.” Ever the supportive husband, Legend stands up for his lady, too: “Funny there's no dad-shaming. When both of us go out to dinner, shame both of us so Chrissy doesn't have to take it all. We'll split it.”, he tweeted. Can you say #couplegoals? Now that they’re expecting baby number two, we’re stalking their Instagram and Twitter account for all the deets! (Photo: Instagram/Chrissy Teigen)

#8 Janet Hsieh

Take it from us, Janet Hsieh is one bubbly mummy pal you’ll want to have! We spoke to the Taiwanese TV personality (and her husband, Fly Entertainment artiste George Young) about her pregnancy some months ago and were blown away by how candid and real she was. Hsieh, 37, gave birth to baby Egan in October, and has been encouraging breastfeeding mums everywhere with her personal accounts and experiences. “It kind of feels like getting little paper cuts on your nipples,” she gripes when talking about that initial latch, and how “When you get your first ‘squirt’ of milk, you will feel this sense of accomplishment you've never thought you could feel from...squirting.” She also gets real about her post-baby bod, reminding us all that “that loose piece of skin around your belly that you hate so much was your baby’s first home.” (Photo: Instagram/Janetagram)

#9 Diana Ser

Every Singaporean mum needs that mummy friend who just gets our education system, so, TV host Diana Ser, 44, is the perfect addition to your mum squad. Married to actor-turned-bank executive James Lye, Ser has three children aged between 5 and 10. She runs an online portal called Crazy About Chinese, which encourages parents to teach their children the language through daily activities. She stresses the importance of bilingualism, “Learning more than one language can help them stay ahead of the competition, it will be advantageous both in their personal and professional lives.” She also calls herself a “Tiger-ish” sort of mum, who believes that “children are the most energetic in the morning so I make it a rule to complete their homework before doing anything else.” You’ll also empathise with her views on being an older mum – Ser had her first child at age 34, and she once told the TODAY newspaper that “The point is not maternal age, but the health and happiness of our mothers”. #10 Kate Pang

We’ve always liked former MediaCorp artiste Kate Pang, 34, for her sassiness and candour, but she truly gained our respect when she opened up about her miscarriage in 2015. Back then, she was mum to Aden, now 3 (they now also have a daughter, Avery, 1) with fellow actor Andie Chen, 32, and was between hosting the Star Awards shows when she started bleeding. While Chen was initially hesitant about sharing about the experience, Pang was determined to “use my experience as an optimistic way of encouraging these mums and letting them know that it's nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about.” She’s also channelled her passion for parenting into the Kandie Network, where she shares her parenting tips and experiences. You’ll find lots of details about the celeb couple’s life, including footage from both Avery and Aden’s birth. (Photo: Instagram/Kate Pang)
