Your (and junior’s) eyes are bound to glaze over upon glancing at the tasty and delectable-looking bakery spread before you. You name it — pies, tarts, quiches, croissants, brownies, Danishes, doughnuts, scones, cookies, cakes, plus homemade jams and granola — this place has it.

Baker-and-cook-toast-&-pancake

Owner Dean Brettschneider, who hails from New Zealand, is passionate about serving simple, comfort fare that’s made with fresh and healthy ingredients to Baker & Cook patrons. The ultra-fluffy French toast, $17 — our personal favourite — made with homemade brioche, is served with maple syrup, toasted almonds, fresh berries, plus a dollop of lemon curd
and mascarpone.

If you’re craving pancakes, $17, Brettschneider’s version is served with not-too-sweet caramelised apples, toffee sauce and a side of Greek yoghurt — super yums! If you prefer to kick-start your day with some protein, try the Spanish Omelette, $16, stuffed with chorizo sausage, capsicum, onion, cheese and chilli.

End your repast with coffee, $1.50 to $5.50, or a smoothie, $9, available in variety of lip-smacking flavours, including mango pineapple, banana, matcha or raspberry. Baker & Cook also serves teas, $5.50, sparkling juices, $5.80, and freshly-squeezed juices, $6 to $6.50.

Baker-and-cook-sprinkles

Tot-O-Meter: If the wide pastry selection doesn’t satisfy your mini-me’s sweet tooth, then the warm Nutella-filled sandwich, $6, will. Let him wash it down with a babyccino, $1.50, hot chocolate, $5, or a glass of milk, $3. If junior loves his sprinkles, he’ll dig the Mo Glazed and filled with rainbow sprinkles, this pastry is close to Brettschneider’s heart, since he made it for his now-grown son when he was a child. With a seating capacity for 70, the spacious café is stroller-friendly, but sit outdoors to truly soak in the neighbourhood atmosphere. Plus, the kiddos will get to run around freely. If you have a “fur kid” in tow, you’ll be happy to know that the café offers big water bowls to their canine chums.
