Whether you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding, it’s important to keep your little one’s bottles and teats clean and sterile. Milk, after all, is a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and babies, in particular, are especially vulnerable.

So, up till the age of 1, it’s advisable to sterilise your baby’s feeding equipment. Besides bottles and teats, this includes the detachable parts of breast pumps, pacifiers, and bowls and spoons — once junior starts on solids.

WHAT This compact steriliser uses natural steam sterilisation to kill 99 per cent of harmful germs in just six minutes. The automatic shut-off is extremely convenient and energy-saving. And if, after sterilising, you don’t open the unit, the sterilised contents can stay sterile for 24 hours.

PROS Nice design, and fits neatly onto a corner of a kitchen table top. It can hold at least six bottles plus teats, and you can remove the centre portion if you don’t need such a large unit when you travel for instance.

CONS Heating plate seems to brown easily. Though the instruction manual said that such limescale could be cleaned with citric acid, lemon juice or vinegar, many say that it did not make much of difference. Others reported that water leaked during usage.

CONS Some parents are wary of using microwaves. You need to be sure of the amount of water you use — using too much water will result in the bottles not being sterilised properly. Use too little water and you might damage the bottles and sterilisers. Also, be careful when removing the steriliser from the microwave oven, or you may scald yourself.
